Our Story

How did House of yoga come to be?

House of Yoga started from very humble beginnings. Our first space was truly the size of a large walk-in closet in The City of York. That room fit about 10 mats comfortably (and we occasionally squeezed in a few more!) with a small, sweet following of committed students and one teacher. We met as a community twice a week for almost 2 years. All classes were donation-based which went to covering our monthly rent. It was like we were in a secret, hidden space with crooked floors and dodgy space heaters on blast to keep us warm. In that time we moved, breathed, and grew in the space we lovingly called Mexico. It was our vacation spot. We would crank up the music and just flow.

No judgments, no agenda - just some yogis supporting one another.

In time, we saw that this concept could be bigger and that we could serve more. We saw that a donation based, member-supported community could thrive and even have great financial success. It seemed that as soon as we said the word, our classes began to pack out. We were on our way to moving into our new House!

We named it House of Yoga because we see that it is a home away from home- a place to rest, be easy, and feed our souls.

This is your House.

What style of Yoga will you find at House of yoga?

Most of our classes are heated to 90 degrees.

Our style is power vinyasa. Vinyasa ("flow") links movement of the body with movement of the breath. We like to think of our practice as a dance, a moving meditation. For that reason (among many), you can expect music in almost every single one of our classes. Yogis and musicians have been hanging out since the beginning of time; at House of Yoga, we honor that tradition with playlists that become an important part of the journey inward. Often, music speaks beyond words and it speaks to the Heart.

We call it House Yoga because we see that, as a tribe, we seem to have a particular way of delivering a powerful practice. You won't get fluffy yoga speak at House of Yoga. We speak from our Hearts and we teach from the experience of our individual lives so you can feel free to relax, drop your guard and keep it real on the mat.

Our classes are inspired to help everyone who walks through our doors.
